Well..Well… guys hope you are doing fine! Today’s article gives you some tips for easy understanding of organic chemistry.
- What is organic chemistry?
In chemistry, organic chemistry deals with study of structural properties, synthesis, reaction of carbon and hydrogen (hydrocarbon) constituting compounds. Some of the organic compounds consist of a number of other elements like oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, halogens, phosphorus, silicon, along with the hydrocarbon. In simple words, organic chemistry is the branch of chemistry which deals with study and synthesis of chemicals, from which the living is made up of.
- Important topics for deep understanding
Most important topics required for proper understanding of organic chemistry includes; general organic chemistry, stereochemistry, organic spectroscopy (NMR, IR, Mass), reaction mechanism, pericyclic reactions, name reactions, reagents in organic synthesis, biochemistry, polymer chemistry.
- How to learn organic chemistry in a very easy way?
- Understanding the basic concepts
This is the most important thing if you are going to learn organic chemistry. By understanding the basic concepts, you can become an expert in this with time. Most students say this is the toughest subject to learn. In my opinion, organic chemistry is the easiest subject in the world, if your way of learning is very easy. Trust me, start with basic concepts and you will become an expert in this subject.
- Practice for making good notes
Practice, Practice, Practice….. Practicing organic chemistry makes you a perfect organic chemist. Yeah….this is the subject you can’t learn without the use of pen and paper. When you are going to learn organic, make good notes. It will help you in understanding and memorizing the particular topic for the long term. I am a doctorate in organic chemistry, I used to make notes for every topic that I used to learn. With my experience, it was very helpful that I became an expert in my subject.
- Add 3D visualization aid
Adding 3D visual aid in learning is just like adding oregano on your pizza slice. 3D visuals help you to analyze the organic molecule in more detail and enhance your understanding much more better. Let me show the difference of adding 3D visuals in 2D structure. It shows you the spatial arrangement of atoms in three dimensional space. For e.g., 3D visuals of Serotonin (a chemical which is responsible for happiness) add more clarity for understanding.
- Make a link
When you understand all the basics then you should make a link in all concepts, as all topics of organic chemistry are interconnected. For e.g., solve the organic reaction problem with mechanism and draw all possible intermediate along with their spectroscopic data.
- Draw flow chart/comparison table
It helps you memorize the difference of role of different reagents on the same molecule or same reagent on different molecules.
- Read good books
If you wanna be an expert in organic, you should read books of excellent authors. There are some books of organic chemistry written by different authors; Jonathan Clayden, Peter Sykes, Jerry March, William Carruthers.
- Seek help from expert (Role of good teacher)
Don’t feel shame in seeking knowledge from a person who is an expert in organic chemistry. It will give you more clarity and enhance your knowledge to more extent.
